SMOOTH SAILING

MAKE THE BREAK FROM WINTER IN A NAUTICAL MIX OF RED, WHITE AND BLUE

WORDS CATHERINE CLIFTON
PHOTOGRAPHS ROY VAN DER VEGT

Classic red, white and blue is a stylish combination perfect for bridging the gap between seasons.

The seaside-inspired palette is generally a welcome sign that warm weather is on the way and the pieces are easy to wear; they look good with a favourite pair of jeans and will also work with more directional fashion looks as the season progresses.

This is definitely the case this year with denim and stripes among the key themes.

New in boutiques this month are striped jackets and long-sleeved tees, short skirts, and dresses at all lengths.

STREET SMART

LUXE TEXTURES AND PRINTS LIGHTEN
THE WINTER LANDSCAPE

WORDS CATHERINE CLIFTON
PHOTOGRAPHS RUSSELL MILLARD

Winter fashion is all about contrast; light and dark, soft and hard, print against print.

Pretty dresses are toughened up with biker jackets, while embellished silks sit under blazers for daywear.

What fashion is lacking in colour it makes up for in texture with faux fur, velvet, tencel, silk, lightweight wool and leather all part of winter collections.

For city dressing, resist the urge to wear head-to-toe black or grey and add interest with contrasting textures or a vibrant print.

ON THE RUN

DEVELOP A WINNING STYLE WITH OUTFITS THAT MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM SATURDAY MORNING SPORT TO LUNCH

WORDS CATHERINE CLIFTON
PHOTOGRAPHS RUSSELL MILLARD

Whether it’s Saturday morning or the whole weekend, chances are you spend some of your time watching children’s sport.

The challenge for fashion followers is finding an outfit that is quick to put on and warm and comfortable to wear, yet appropriate to take beyond the sporting arena.

This winter’s key casual look requires a slim leg – either leggings or slim-fitting jeans – teamed with several long tops and boots. Most tops have been designed to layer rather than provide warmth on their own, making wardrobe basics such as long-sleeved tees essential.

Invest in a great jacket and either leggings or jeans, and then stock up on layering pieces in a mix of colours and stripes.

investment piece. Mink Pink

FEMININE CHARMS

PLAY DRESS UPS WITH LUXE FABRICS AND EYE-CATCHING ACCESSORIES

New-season fashions have an emphasis on smart tailoring and elegance with blazers, belts and boots among the dominant pieces.
There is a feminine feel to the season from the casual ease of boyfriend jeans teamed with a striped top and jacket to a pencil skirt worn with a trench coat and heels.
Feel-good textures of leather, velvet, wool and silk are evident in many collections with colours ranging from typical winter shades of black and grey through to purple, blue and red.
US-based celebrity stylist Carson Kressley will be visiting Westfield Marion on Thursday, April 29. Hear his thoughts on the season at Centre Stage at 10.30am. We’ve also highlighted some of his ideas on these pages.

AUTUMN BREAK

DRESS FOR COOLER DAYS IN LAYERS OF
LUXE TEXTURES

The Easter long weekend is generally the first chance to wear new-season fashion – and possibly the perfect excuse to buy some pieces.
Many autumn/winter collections are a mix of black, charcoal and grey with interest added through a block colour, varying textures or embellishment such as studs and metallic threads.
Key shades for the new season are blue, red and purple, or subtle variations on the palette. Soft lilac and muted blues have also been introduced and work well against the dark greys and black.
Outfits rely less on colour and print and more on texture, with fine gauge and chunky knits teamed with smooth silks and leathers.
Accessories such as oversized bags and long boots demand to be noticed with metallic sheen, studs and shiny patent finishes.

RAISING THE STAKES

ELEGANCE REIGNS ON RACE DAY

Most holidays call for casual fashions but our Adelaide Cup long weekend (March 8) is a more stylish affair.

For those heading to the track, elegant dresses and lightweight suits are the best bet.

Dressing up rather than down is never more appropriate than at the races, so splash out in bold colours, vibrant prints and luxurious fabrics.

This season rich shades of purple, emerald green and blue
are complemented by graphic black and white designs and animal prints.

Complete the outfit with a locally made hat or hair decoration.

FESTIVAL FLAIR

MATCH THE MOOD OF OUR VIBRANT FESTIVAL CITY WITH A SPLASH OF COLOUR

With the Adelaide Festival and Fringe launching this month, it’s time to cast aside black and white in favour of something more colourful.

Show some artistic flair with an unusual print, bold colour or embellished garment.

Summer trends such as crochet, denim and beading are still popular. Kaftans and maxi dresses are ideal for warm evenings and will make the transition from opera to a comedy show with ease.

FESTIVE FROCKS

TAKE A SIMPLE, YET ELEGANT APPROACH TO DRESSING THIS CHRISTMAS

Christmas brings a sense of occasion that requires a well considered outfit.

Unless you are celebrating at the beach, the swimsuit and kaftan you bought while Christmas shopping won’t be enough.

Opt for an elegant dress in one of the season’s bright hues, such as purple or blue, festive red or traditional black and white.

The season’s key dresses sit above the knee and come in a beautiful mix of printed fabrics which drape around the body.

Add accessories such as several layers of bangles, a cuff, cocktail ring or bold necklace.

Sydney designer Lisa Ho, who has just opened her first Adelaide boutique, says women want to wear something pretty but not be constrained by fashion.

“You still want to be able to play with the kids and eat!” she says.

Graphic prints are a strong look for summer. Lisa Ho chain link dress ($679), cow hair belt ($289), CC Skye bracelet ($235), thread bracelet ($355), Lisa Ho Boutique

DRESS TO IMPRESS

THE MAXI AND THE PLAYSUIT ARE SHAPING UP TO BE SUMMER’S HOTTEST LOOKS

Whatever your favourite fashion decade, chances are you will see elements of it on the streets this summer.

Styles from the ‘50s through to the ‘80s have influenced most labels resulting in shoulder pads, leggings, washed out denim and harem pants all being prominent again.

For the best showcase of what the season has to offer, don’t miss the BMW Adelaide Fashion Festival from November 18 to 21.

The event will include parades showing the work of our emerging designers as well as the latest high street looks, competitions and a very fashionable lunch.

STOCK UP ON COLOURFUL SEPARATES FOR SUNNY DAYS AHEAD

The dress has been a strong look for several seasons but this spring, separates are making a return. While mini and maxi dresses will still be popular for the hottest part of the year, our milder days will be dominated by cropped harem pants, shorts and skirts.

It is a season of contrasts between soft, flowing pieces and slim-fitting jackets and jeans.

Neutral zone

MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM WINTRY GREY TO SUMMER BRIGHTS WITH FASHIONABLE ITEMS IN SOFT, NEUTRAL SHADES

The start of spring is a much anticipated time on the fashion calendar. After months in sombre black and grey, all those colourful pieces are tempting.
One way to bridge the gap between seasons is with a mix of neutrals. They look great together but also work well against black and can be teamed with summer’s brighter shades as the season progresses.

Neutral shades are not only practical but they look great on any age.

Casual Day

STRIPES AND CHECKS ADD MUCH-NEEDED
COLOUR TO WEEKEND WEAR

While it doesn’t move at the same pace as women’s fashion, menswear does show some seasonal changes especially in casual collections.

Denim is strong with a variety of finishes, including faded skinny leg styles and straight leg jeans with an aged quality or a “distressed” finish that makes them look like they’ve been worn for years.

Sporty slim-fitting tees, logo tees, and hooded sweats are all popular, while elements of winter’s college style are continuing such as vests and zip-front knits.

For those heading out to lunch this Fathers Day (Sunday, September 6) – or keen to snap up a fashionable gift for the occasion – try some colour with a striped or checked shirt in shades of green and blue.

1 Vests have made a comeback in women’s and men’s fashion collections and are a practical solution to office heating. For weekend wear, they can be teamed with a T-shirt for a more casual feel. Striped shirt ($89.95), black pants ($109.95), vest, from Tarocash

2 For those seeking colour, green/blue shades are a fresh option. Striped shirt ($59.95), from Connor

3 This zip-front knit appeals to all ages because it can be worn as a classic or given a tough edge. It features a hood as well. Avatar T-shirt ($30), Premonition check shirt ($110), G-star hooded knit ($240), from Carbon

4 Checked fabrics have been popular this winter and look set to continue through spring. Jeans ($59.95), check shirt ($44.95) and T-shirt ($25), all from Ed Harry

5  Layering is a key look in any fashion story. The lightweight jacket is ideal for transeasonal wear. Stray jeans ($99.99), T-shirt ($49.99), check shirt ($79.99) and black jacket ($129.99), from Roger David
